Jiu-Jitsu means "gentle art"  and it is uniquely adaptable for all ages, athletic abilities and temperaments as it makes use of a "soft method" to control and defend against an opponent's attack. The "soft method" is characterized by the indirect application of force to defeat an opponent. More specifically, it is the principle of using one's opponent's strength against him and adapting well to changing circumstances...

Karate means “A system of unarmed self-defense, using blows and kicks, originally Japanese, now a popular combative sport”.  Many of today's kickboxing and standup styles trace their origins to this original martial art.

Judo, like Jiu-Jitsu, is focused on the "soft method" of self-defense and attack.  Judo includes a variety of rolls, falls, throws, hold downs, chokes, joint-locks, and strikes, however, in judo the primary focus is on throwing (投げ技, nage-waza), and groundwork (ne-waza).

Wrestling is the act of physical engagement between two unarmed persons, in which each wrestler strives to get an advantage over or control of their opponent. Physical techniques which embody the style of wrestling are clinching, holding, locking, and leverage.

Parents need to be looking first for the Quality of martial arts classes and what their child may be learning not convenience and/or the lowest price.  Be sure that your child does not get a false since of security from karate programs which only focus on one sport aspect of self-defense.

Self-defense situations are commonly broken down into four ranges:

Kicking Boxing Clinching/Takedowns Ground/Grappling

While most fights start on the feet, common Police Statistics indicate that over 90% of all self-defense situations typically end up on the ground/grappling range. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the single martial art that incorporates the study of all four ranges of fighting while making sure that the student will know how to thoughtfully control one's opponent without being harmed or having to harm the opponent.  This is the uniquely essential self-defense skill taught by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (this is especially important to caring parents who want their children to be able to control a situation without resorting to hitting).  Having this skill, along with the striking skills, gives more control over any situation that should arise.  This attitude of thoughtful control and training for all types of real world self-defense situations is what distinguishes Jiu-Jitsu from Arts such as Tae Kwon Do, Judo and other types of Karate.

Our students are required to exercise both their bodies and their minds. Because the Martial Arts give specific attention to both elements, they differ from most other sports and physical activities which usually focus on purely physical training. Serious Martial Arts students believe that the Martial Arts are not about fighting but living. The principles the students learn in the Martial Arts provide guidance on how to act outside the training hall. In the end, studies have shown that many of those who practice Martial Arts differ from the general public in that they show a lower level of anxiety, an increased sense of responsibility, and a higher level of self-esteem.
